(Botched-Burned & Lessons-Learned)

Chapter-1: Botched FDC installations & repairs, (incompatible fire hose threads)

BOTCHED: (1 of 9 ) ALL snoots were stolen by brass thieves. High-Rise apartments with 100's of tenants. Repairs are urgent & fire watch  is mandatory.

BOTCHED: (2 of 9) Contractor  botched the repair. These wheeled discharge outlets are for Standpipe stair landings.  (Not FDC ports)

BOTCHED: (3 of 9)  Contractor removed the discharge outlets and replaced them with snoots that have NO clappers. This  FDC requires clappered snoots.

BOTCHED: (4 of 9) This FDC manifold requires snoots with HINGED CLAPPERS. There are no hinges or clappers on these snoots. Pump operators nightmare.

LESSON: (4 of 6) The SpeedSwivel is hooked up on the far left, and pumping an FDC at the Los Vegas Riviera hotel-casino. (17 floors.)

LESSON: (6 of 9)  The Las Vegas pumper has a discharge pressure of 310 psi. SpeedSwivel is holding perfectly without any leaks or problems.

Snoots with Hinged Clappers

LESSON: (7 of 9) This is an FDC snoot with a HINGED CLAPPER. When multiple snoots are installed on the same FDC manifold, each snoot needs a clapper.

LESSON: (8 of 9) Do you see the hinged clappers? Clappers allow a pump operator to hook-up or shut down a single hose without shutting everything down

LESSON: (9 of 9) This dept. allows NST swivels & knox locks, but, has a special thread on their fire hose. Four hose adapters needed to support FDC.

Chapt. 2: NFPA 13-E 4.2 line-6, Stolen or Damaged FDC

LESSON: (1 of 3)  Pre-plan for stolen brass swivels. Always have an alternate plan. A SpeedSwivel is an action plan  Put one on your inventory.

LESSON: (2 of 3)  It's risky to be without a SpeedSwivel on every engine crew inventory. Call for a quote.

LESSON: (3 of 3) SpeedSwivel FDC Adapter

LESSON: (3 of 3) SpeedSwivel FDC Adapter

CHAPTER 3: Brass theft at the Days Inn

LESSON: (1 of 5 ) Sta-9 called me out (Car-99) 6 a.m.,check standpipes at Days-Inn 502 W. Camelback. 125 rooms, 6 floors, not-vacant. Next pic.

LESSON: (2 of 5 ) Code approved dry standpipes from (50's-60's) . Two stairwells 6 floors, 12 standpipe outlets with wheeled shut-offs were all stolen

LESSON: ( 3 of 5) Brass thieves have stolen the entire wheeled  standpipe discharge FDC outlets from 12 hotel stair landings.

LESSON: (4 of 5) All the FDC's on the exterrior of this hotel were also stolen by brass thieves.

LESSON: (5 of 5)  Crews anxious and ready to fight fire. Incompatible hose threads are always a surprise. Have an alternate plan & water supply.

Chapter 4: DOUBLE FEMALE ON A DRY STANDPIPE DISCHARGE VALVE OUTLET.

BURNED: (1 of 2) Flames & 6-7-8 fl-hotel exposure. My crew E-9-B stretched off standpipe to fire & (E-5), J.Ostaff used double female on 2nd Fl.,SP.

BURNED: (2 of 2)  This is station 9 B shift , Phoenix Fire Department. This is what a GREAT crew looks like. Nice Job on this office fire.

CHAPTER 5: NOT SHUT OFF CUT OFF

LESSON LEARNED: (1 of 3)  Fire Crews are now finding BRASS STEMS cut off at the control wheel. NOT SHUT BUT CUT.

LESSON : (2 of 3)  A closer look at a vandalized O-S-& Y valve that has a stolen brass stem. Cut off at the wheel for the brass value.

LESSON: (3 of 3) "NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION"  A sleeve now sold to deture thieves rom cutting brass stems. Visible stem indicates open stem

CHAPTER 6: BOTCHED STANDPIPE FDC ON CONDO's

BOTCHED: (1 of 4) This standpipe FDC supplies all the fire protection systems. Threaded plastic caps are pounded on. UNBELIEVABLE, 4 story condos !!

BOTCHED : (2of 4) The Brass swivels on this FDC were stolen. Plastic CAPS are pounded onto the Standpipe FDC? Muti-fam, 4-5 story condo's downtown.

BOTCHED: (3 of 4) Red Threaded caps like these are sometimes used on stairwell standpipe outlets instead of brass threaded caps. NEVER forTHIS!

SPEEDSWIVEL to the rescue: ( 4 of 4)  A SpeedSwivel is the ONLY adapter that will get the job done when swivels have been stolen from an FDC.

CHAPTER 6: BOTCHED FDC INSTALLATIONS

BOTCHED: (1 of 2) Side by side FDC's are not good. A Contractor's error that should not have been approved. GREEN KNOX LOCKS ARE PHOENIX.

PERFECT INSTALL: (2 of 2 ) This FDC stacked arrangement will work very well. This FDC was recently replaced after a theft.....top one much newer.

CHAPTER 7: The "MORE" Button is a Menu: The Feature Article is about an Arizona fire that killed 29 (in-part) because of incompatible hose threads. In

BURNED: (1 of 2) The Featured Article about Pioneer Hotel  "MORE" button. Dan Faucett & myself pulled a lady from a bedroom house fire. Unconscious.
